Delphi Complete Works of Ann Radcliffe Illustrated eBook Ann Radcliffe

Never heard of Ann Radcliffe until I saw her mentioned in Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey". So I went straight to "Mystery of Udolpho". Yes, there are better novels in the English Language, but this turned out to be a really good read, and I will start reading some of the other novels that are included in this Complete Works. Oh, if you get this Set of books and read "Mystery of Udolpho"... there is this strange Thing -- its a long book and back in those days, to do a substantial Re-write would involve going through hundreds of manuscript pages -- very time consuming. Well, Ann Radcliffe introduced this Dog into the Story -- "Manchon" (French for 'Muffy")... well, the dog comes and goes... hundreds of pages without a single tail-wag, and then all of sudden it runs up from out of literally nowhere to bite some bad guy's leg. anyway, THAT is why English Noveistsl after Ann Radcliffe have shied away from Dogs in the Story-- in real life Dogs would just insert themselves Everywhere and All the Time. THAT might have been cute, but apparently Radcliffe didn't think of it, and she decided to just forget about the Dog, and it would have been too much work to cut "Manchon" out of the Story in the previous pages. But, anyway, the Book Ends and I am sitting there wondering "what happened to poor little Manchon?" .

Delphi Complete Works of Ann Radcliffe Illustrated eBook Ann Radcliffe Reviews

This review is purely on this version, not the stories. There are already sufficient reviews for the individual works of Ann Radcliffe for a reader to make a judgement. While I appreciate $3(AUD) is great value, this kindle version was very difficult to navigate. You can only move between whole books, not chapters.
Glad I got a chance to find them all on the nook. I still need to track them all down as books though.
This Delphi anthology will appeal to those searching for the ancestor of Austen's Northanger Abbey or for one of the earliest Gothic novels. It will not appeal to anyone looking for a rollicking good read. So I should rate this as 5 stars or 1 star, depending on what you are looking for. Radcliffe's atmosphere is Gothic and her descriptions are excellent, but her characters are cardboard and her plotting is stagnant. I confess that I am basing this review on my reading of Udolpho somewhat abridged and in paperback. It may be a while before I get to Radcliffe on , because I have so many Delphi anthologies ahead of it.
A great opportunity to read some of the gothic style novels referenced by Jane Austen. Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility both contain homage to Ann Radcliffe. Current Regency authors do the same.
Worth the purchase
Great! Love it.
In all fairness to this wonderful Delphi ebook collection, I beg to respectfully disagree with a reviewer who wrote critically about the seeming inability to access specific content within it. An active TOC takes you directly to each book title; each book then has its own active TOC permitting direct access to specific chapters. (This secondary TOC may appear AFTER introductory information and/or some pictorial matter for that book but always BEFORE the text.) Thus users can easily select the book(s) and chapter(s) of their choice.

Radcliffe is, perhaps of greater interest historically in regard to her role in the development and popularity of the Gothic novel, rather than as an author today's readers might choose for spooky, escapist entertainment (though many contemporary readers DO find her quite enjoyable). The now-standard conventions of Gothic horror may seem commonplace and overdone to modern readers, but this was not so when these books were written. Readers of Jane Austen, for example, never expected HER heroines to confront such villainy (the over-active imagination of Catherine Morland in "Northanger Abbey," notwithstanding). Yes, it requires time, patience, and adjusting to Radcliffe's melodramatic and descriptive (as in wordy) writing-style to fully appreciate her works, but those who begin reading with somewhat less-than-great expectations may find themselves pleasantly surprised.

Of the six novels, two or three are better than the others, but I would give them (collectively) a rating of 4-stars. However, given the quality of this Delphi ebook set (which mercifully is not padded with as much supplemental material as are many other Delphi collections), and to compensate for the aforementioned reviewer's unfairly low assessment, I have rated this particular edition 5-stars.
