This is the second in Graham's trilogy set about the three Slater brothers who fought for the South. The first two stories are set on the Missouri-Kansas border during the Civil War and just after: DARK STRANGER (Cole), RIDES A HERO (Malachi). The third, APACHE SUMMER (Jamie) is set in 1870 in Texas.

In this second book, it's 1865 and the war is over, but jayhawkers and bushwhackers still tear apart the Missouri-Kansas border. And one gang of bushwhackers is out for revenge on Cole Slater. Meanwhile, his brother, Malachi Slater and Shannon McCahy, who we met in book one, are still having their own private war, that is until the day they discover all that scraping hides an attraction neither can deny--sexy Southern gentleman meets beautiful feisty Yankee sympathizer, oh yes!

Just like book one, this novel held my interest and gave me a feeling for the tensions of the North and South, in this case even after the war was officially over. Though Lincoln wanted a healing peace for the nation, it was not to be. Graham writes well and tells a good story. It's a great follow on to book one and I recommend it!

The sequel to Dark Stranger - the story continues. Shannon McCahy (a yankee supporter) and Malachi Slater (a rebel soldier) pull together to look for Shannon's sister Kristin Slater, Malachi's sister-in-law, who has been kidnapped in hopes to draw her husband cole Slater out. The Civil War is over but the Slater brothers have been put on the Wanted List as murderers due to Cole Slater gunning down the man bushwacker that murdered his first wife and left Cole for dead. In Dark Stranger (the story of Kristin McCahy and Cole Slater) Shannon and Malachi couldn't be in the same room together without breaking into arguments- they hated each other that much or so it seemed. How are they going to be able to cooperate and work together to find Kristin and get word to Cole to stay put? They say the line between Love and Hate is very thin. Malachi spends as much or more time getting Shannon out of trouble because of her loud mouth and hot-temper. But when there's a threat of losing Shannon to bushwhackers Malachi realizes that he has crossed over from hate to love. All 3 brothers come together to save Kristin. It is great seeing them all together again. The characters are all powerful. It's a good read!

However, the killer had a powerful and rich father - who circulated wanted posters. He has placed hefty prices on all 3 of the Slater brothers heads.

Now, the murder's father has had Kristen kidnapped, to get Cole to rescue her. Malachi teams with his nemesis, Shannon, to get Kristen. Unfortunately, Shannon is worse than no help; she's hot-tempered and speaks her mind. Before long, Malachi has to rescue Shannon too.

This book has plenty of action! The only complaint I had was with Shannon - I couldn't imagine why Malachi would want such a loose cannon!

Heather Graham really knows how to play with words and entwine a story that makes you not want to put down.

The conflict between the hero and heroine make for a lively story. Also it makes you realize that both sides of the Civil War had honorable and dishonorable men. It also made me realize how long hatred hangs around after a war is over.
