So why have I spent a year writing this reflection on my life? One reason is that I finally recognize that I have a finite period of time left in this life, and I want to understand as best I can the path I have chosen to follow. My literary mentor, Carl Jung, speaks of the need to find wholeness in our lives. Mythically it is expressed in a series of questions Who am I? Why was I given this life to live? And, what will happen to me when I die? The purpose of this work is not to give answers, but rather to ask questions as others have throughout history.
Carl Jung has another descriptive term for this process he calls it individuation; or, how we become the individual we are meant to be. So my understanding of these two Jungian concepts, individuation and wholeness, is that in life we have to not only find our uniqueness, but also discover how we can best serve human society. For me, both of these purposes in life have been fulfilled through creating and performing stories. Storytelling is the path I discovered to follow in my life.
The work I have created will encourage others to reflect on their own process of individuation and sense of wholeness. Because story has been the vehicle for expressing my creative energy, I use it here in a variety of forms to share the ebb and flow of my life. Some of these stories have only a written form, but others are shared additionally in audio or video. There are nine audio and nine video performances of certain written stories. These additional forms of stories vary from a seven-minute audio recording of a children’s fable to a fifty-eight minute documentary film about a group of oral storytellers.
I hope all who share this multi-media experience will stop and reflect on the times in life that are explored in each story.

This is a heartfelt and intellectually challenging view of one man's journey through life's inevitable joys and trials. Some might call this a memoir, but I would suggest that this is a hybrid of story collection/personal reflection and philosophical musings-- much like Carl Jung's "Memories, Dreams and Reflections. I was glad to see that this reading experience is greatly enhanced by the many illustrations and photographs and the multi-media links to storytelling clips on Ray's website. As a long-time reader of the works of Carl Jung, I found Ray's understanding of the essential elements of Jungian thought to be clear and bracing. His application of these insights in his own life as a parent, husband, storyteller and author, care-giver for his mother and for an extended community of like-minded storytellers reminded me of the importance of cultivating an inner life, especially when entering the last third of our lifetime. Anyone who enjoys a good story and a wry, wise and unconventional take on this crazy life we have been given will enjoy spending a few hours with Ray Gray as your guide and companion on this journey toward what he calls individuation.Product details

GRANDPA JUNG'S LESSONS for a slow reader A Look at Life through Story eBook Ray Gray Reviews
The story of one life, compellingly told, offers us intimate connection with another, not only for the life it reveals, but for the mirror it holds to our own life, and the connections we have to the larger sphere of collective concern. In this highly engaging and contemporary multi-media approach, Ray Gray’s insightful memoir is crafted to provide a rich exploration of personal philosophy using a foundation of Jungian psychology, and the structural framework of engaging stories. Some are autobiographical; some adaptations from folklore and literature. This combination makes it difficult to categegorize the work; it expands the notion of ‘chronicle’, ‘journal’ or ‘memoir’ and catapults us into a dimension where memories and reflections are impinged upon by the richness of imagination and dreams. In the search for personal mythology and meaning, his approach opens us to a vast array of possibility, with no definitive answers. Like any good philosopher, he is more interested in the questions that inform our lives than in any answers we may invent. Like any good storyteller, he does so in an engaging, heartfelt manner.
